Cost of living in Cagliari
The highest rents in Sardinia and among the highest in the South, driven by students, tourism and limited supply in the historic quarters and at the Poetto; lower prices in Pirri and the hinterland. Groceries and restaurants average, with an island surcharge on some goods. Cheap CTM pass; travel to the mainland expensive outside the territorial continuity scheme.

Housing
Cagliari's OMI quotations are the highest on the island and, in the central zones (Castello, Marina, Villanova, Stampace, San Benedetto) and at the Poetto, approach those of cities in Central Italy: supply is limited by geography (sea and lagoons) and contested by students, public workers and short-term lets. Pirri, Is Mirrionis and the hinterland municipalities (Monserrato, Quartu, Selargius, Elmas) cost markedly less and are linked by CTM and the metro-tram.
Groceries, transport, insularity
Food shopping and eating out are around the national average; Sardinian products (bread, cheeses, vegetables, fish) are good value at the markets, while goods shipped from the mainland carry a surcharge. The monthly CTM pass is cheap and also covers the hinterland. The island-specific item is travel: flights to Rome and Milan under the territorial continuity scheme have capped fares for residents, but other routes and summer ferries are expensive, and every trip to the mainland must be planned.
