Climate: sun, Mistral and flamingos

Among Italy's sunniest and least rainy regional capitals: mild winters, hot but dry summers tempered by the sea. The north-westerly Mistral blows often and hard. The Molentargius and Santa Gilla lagoons host nesting flamingos. Summer wildfires on the island; water from drought-prone reservoirs; PM10 above the limit on some days.

The climate in short

Cagliari has a dry Mediterranean climate: mild winters, with rare days below 5 °C and short rains concentrated between October and March; long, hot and almost rainless summers, where the sea and the wind keep maximum temperatures below those of the island's interior and the Scirocco brings the heat peaks. The number of rain days is among the lowest of the regional capitals (see data). The Mistral, a north-westerly wind, blows on many days a year, sometimes with strong gusts: it cools the summer, makes beaches and outdoor activities difficult when intense, and is the reason for the success of windsurfing and kitesurfing at the Poetto.

Lagoons and flamingos

The city is squeezed between two protected wetlands: to the east the Molentargius-Saline regional nature park, about 1,600 hectares of former salt pans and ponds where pink flamingos have nested steadily since the 1990s and which the park authority describes as the Mediterranean's most important site for the species; to the west the Santa Gilla lagoon, with the canal port and other colonies. Flamingos are seen from the roads and cycle paths all year. Lagoon mosquitoes are a well-known summer nuisance.

Water, wildfires, air

Mains water, distributed by Abbanoa, comes from reservoirs (including the Flumendosa-Campidano system) which in drought years fall to critical levels: recent restrictions have hit mainly agriculture and the north of the island, but the issue returns every dry summer. Summer wildfires affect rural Sardinia and the hills around the city more than the urban area. Air quality is good thanks to the wind, with PM10 exceedances linked to traffic and Saharan dust (see data).
