Universities
The Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro is Apulia's largest university: it offers courses in every discipline, with the Palazzo Ateneo and the humanities and law departments in the Murat centre, sciences at the Ernesto Quagliariello campus on Via Orabona (shared with the Politecnico), medicine at the Policlinico and branch sites in Taranto and Brindisi. The Politecnico di Bari, the only polytechnic in the South, concentrates engineering and architecture between the Via Orabona campus and the Via Re David site (Japigia). The offer is completed by the Niccolò Piccinni Conservatory, the Academy of Fine Arts and LUM university courses in Casamassima.
Student support
ADISU Puglia manages scholarships, canteens and beds for students of Apulian universities through a single annual call ("Benefici e servizi"), published in summer with a deadline usually in late summer: the grant depends on income (ISEE) and merit; beds in residences go first to out-of-town students meeting the economic criteria. Canteens are near the campus and the centre. Out-of-town students enrolled at Bari's universities are exempt from the tourist tax.
Where students live
The districts most lived in by students are Carrassi, San Pasquale and Picone, a few minutes' walk from the Via Orabona campus, and Poggiofranco for those wanting more recent buildings; those who want the centre choose Murat, Madonnella or Libertà, where rooms cost less. Single rooms in shared flats are the most common format; contracts are often transitional or student contracts (6–36 months).
